You are a journalist, usually writing pieces for more intelligent “magazine” publications rather than newspapers. The first cylinder came down near your home, and from that point you were catapulted into the heart of the events of the invasion. No living human has as much experience of the Martians as you have, and you are an altogether tougher and more resilient man than the comfortable academic who saw the first cylinder open.
During the war you met and travelled with the Artilleryman, David Blake, and still regard him as a friend and comrade, though not especially trustworthy or reliable.
You have a home in the suburb of Maybury Hill and a wife, Mary, whom you love enormously and will not risk harm to.
